Today is all about staying ahead of the burn. Wall balls punish athletes who try to hero unbroken sets late in a race, so we're practicing smart breaks under fatigue. Run hard, then hit the wall with a plan.

Today's Session — WALL BALLS: BREAK EARLY

  • Do 100 wall balls in planned sets (e.g. 25-25-25-25).
  • Take 5-10 second rests between sets.
  • Run 800m, then go straight to the wall balls.
  • Focus on form and breathing while fatigued.

How this format works

The BREAK EARLY format means you split your 100 wall balls into planned sets before your legs and shoulders force you to. Run 800m at a strong pace, then go directly into the wall balls broken into sets like 25-25-25-25, or 20-20-20-20-20 if you want smaller chunks. Rest only 5-10 seconds between sets, just enough for one or two deep breaths and a reset on the ball. The run counts as part of the effort, so no long recovery before you pick up the ball. One round is: 800m run plus 100 wall balls with your chosen split.

How to attack it

Most athletes blow up between reps 40 and 70 because they went unbroken early and hit a wall they can't climb out of. Pre-plan your splits before the run starts and commit to them, even if the first set feels easy. Exhale hard on the throw and inhale on the catch to lock in a rhythm you can hold. If your target is 25s, don't chase 30 in set one just because you feel fresh. The goal is finishing set four at the same pace you started set one.

Scale it

Newer to this: Beginners can drop to 60 or 70 total wall balls split into sets of 15, and use a lighter ball. Cut the run to 400m if the combined effort is too much, and extend rest between sets to 15-20 seconds while keeping the break-early mindset.

Want more: Advanced athletes can push to 120 wall balls split 30-30-30-30 with strict 5-second rests, or add a second 800m run after the wall balls for a full race-simulation piece. To sharpen tempo, set a target time per set of 25 and hold it across all four rounds without slowing.
