Today is all about controlled aggression. Wall balls after an 800m run will test your legs, your lungs, and your composure. This is where race-day discipline gets built.
Today's Session — WALL BALLS: BREAK EARLY
- Perform 3 sets of 25 wall balls (bodyweight squat + wall toss), resting 5 seconds between sets.
- Run 800m immediately before starting each set.
- Keep rest intervals short but consistent.
- Focus on form under fatigue, not just speed.
How this format works
The BREAK EARLY format is exactly what it sounds like: you plan your break before fatigue forces one on you. For this session, you'll run 800m, then immediately hit 25 wall balls, rest just 5 seconds, and repeat for 3 total rounds. A full round is one 800m run plus one set of 25 wall balls. Keep the 5-second rest tight and identical every round, no drifting to 10 or 15 seconds because your legs are heavy. The point is to walk into each set already knowing your rep splits, not improvising under fatigue.
How to attack it
Most athletes fall apart on the second set, when the run tax catches up and the shoulders start to protest. Split your 25 reps early, something like 10-8-7 or 9-8-8, and stick to the plan across all three rounds. Breathe on the catch, not the toss, and use the descent of the squat as your recovery moment. Run the 800s at a repeatable pace, not a hero pace, so you can walk straight into the wall and start reps without a long reset.
Scale it
Newer to this: Drop to 3 sets of 15 wall balls with a lighter ball, and shorten the run to 400m before each set. If squat depth breaks down under fatigue, use a target line on the wall to keep the toss consistent and honest.
Want more: Push to 3 sets of 30 wall balls with a heavier ball, and hold the 5-second rest without exception. For an extra layer, aim for unbroken sets on rounds one and two, and cap the 800m runs at a fixed target time to force even pacing.
